Problems and Faults with the W212 E Class

The W212 E Class (2009 – 2016) was the successor to the W211 (2002 – 2009). Some may disagree, but the W212 was a complete new design, ditching the circular headlights for a more striking setup and a technology filled cabin. The W212 is a very well built car and is promising signs that Mercedes are recovering from the previous E Class reliability issues. Many Mercedes mechanics agree that the W212 E Class is as well built as the W124’s from the 90’s and for good reason.

Engines include 4 cylinders CGI and CDI engines and more desirable 3 litre diesels, 3.5 litre v6 petrol, 5.4 litre v8 petrol and the AMG E63. The W212 came in a Saloon, Coupe, Estate and Convertible variant with the engines available in all. The W211 E Class, which was the predecessor may have had its problems, however you see many with mega motorway mileage. The facelift version of the W211 was much more refined and had less problems.

Common Reliability Problems

  1. Power Assisted Steering Leak – Their is a potential for the power steering fluid to leak occur on the connection to the fluid line to the pump. Drivers will be made aware of this by a noise near the pump.
  2. Fuel Leaks at the Fuel Filter with integrated fuel heaters – Fuel can exit the car and is noticeable by a diesel odour.
  3. Rear Suspension Level Sensor – (W212’s without Airmatic) – Blocking of the level sensor linkages can lead to the level sensor recording that the vehicle is too low all the time, which results in contact pressure rise in both air springs.
  4. Cracks in Air Hose – Results in the engine cutting out and going into limp mode
  5. Artico Seat Damage – The lower seat area is prone to splitting

W212 Modifications and AMG Upgrades

The E Class has serious road presence already, however with AMG front and rear bumpers with side skirts to match, the E Class will be next level. The body kit allows people who can’t avoid the AMG versions to have the looks but without the expensive running costs. One part that some Mercedes owners don’t like about the W212 is the matte finish on the grill, however the all chrome Avantgarde style grill can completely change the front end.

Overall, the W212 is a great long term investment if you are looking for a stylish everyday car. Without doubt, it is an improvement over the W211 with its great reliability and updated look inside and out. The E63 version of the W212 is the last E Class we will see if of the mighty 6.3 litre v8 as the successor will more than likely be a turbo version.
